Itinerary

Day 1

Odeceixe

Welcome to Odeceixe, a picturesque village set where the Alentejo meets the Algarve and one of the most beloved gateways to the Fishermen’s Trail.

Here, the Seixe River winds lazily toward the ocean, separating two regions and creating one of the most beautiful coastal settings in Portugal. Wander through the whitewashed lanes of the old village, where blue-trimmed houses, small cafés, and local shops capture the quiet rhythm of rural life by the sea.

A short walk away lies Praia de Odeceixe, a stunning beach framed by cliffs and dunes, where the river meets the Atlantic in a perfect curve of sand. Watch surfers ride the waves, dip your feet in the cool water, or simply enjoy the wide horizon as the sun sinks behind the cliffs.

Odeceixe still retain its simple, authentic charm. Farmers work the surrounding fields, fishermen head out at dawn, and the pace of life moves gently with the tides. In the evening, taste the flavors of the region in one of the village’s cozy restaurants, fresh grilled fish, octopus salad, or the classic “cataplana de marisco” served with local wine.
It is the perfect place to slow down, breathe in the ocean air, and prepare for your journey south along the Fishermen’s Trail, where the wild beauty of Portugal’s coast unfolds step by step.

This day leads to Sagres and the Cabo de São Vicente, offering sweeping views of the Atlantic and a palpable sense of anticipation. The barren landscape gives way to the dramatic promontory of the cape, once thought to be the edge of the known world.

This iconic site of Cabo de São Vicente, has been a place of spiritual reverence since ancient times. In Roman times, it was called Promontorium Sacrum (“Sacred Promontory”). During the Age of Discoveries, it became a symbol of Portugal’s maritime ambitions and was closely linked to Prince Henry the Navigator.

Sagres is known for its maritime history, where the Fortaleza de Sagres stands, a fortress associated with the explorations of the 15th century. In 1443, Prince Henry the Navigator requested that his brother Pedro grant him the Sagres region to establish a town. His testamentary letter of September 19, 1460, indicates that Sagres was intended as a place of assistance for navigators passing through, offering supplies or refuge.

The Farol de São Vicente (lighthouse) at the cape is one of Europe’s most powerful, guiding ships along this historic coastline.

The air carries the scent of salt and freedom, and the sounds of waves echo against the rugged headlands that once inspired explorers to sail beyond the known world. After days of hiking along the coast, Sagres offers the perfect place to rest, reflect, and let the rhythm of the Atlantic sink in.

Wander through the relaxed village streets, where surf shops, cafés, and small restaurants create a laid-back atmosphere that feels both wild and welcoming. Visit the historic Sagres Fortress and gaze out toward Cabo de São Vicente, the southwestern tip of Europe, where sunsets burn deep red over the vast ocean.

Life in Sagres moves with the tides. Fishermen still work the small harbor, surfers chase the waves, and travelers gather in the evening to share stories of the trail. Enjoy a meal of freshly caught fish or “arroz de polvo” (octopus rice) paired with local wine, and watch the last light fade from the cliffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I navigate?

The price includes all-in-one trip app, which serves as your navigation tool, offline maps with real-time, turn-by-turn directions guide you along the exact route, so you always know where you are and where to go next.

If you have your own navigation device, you can download the GPX file before departure and use your preferred tools instead.

There’s no guide walking beside you, but the app plus your 1:1 live video briefing before departure cover everything you’d otherwise rely on a guide for.

That said, self-guided travel still calls for a basic comfort with being outdoors and following a route. Check this package’s difficulty rating to see what level this is, and if you’re still not sure, just ask our team before booking.

Does the app work without internet or phone reception in the mountains?

Yes. Every map, route, and turn-by-turn direction is downloaded to your phone before you set out, along with your accommodation and transfer details, food recommendations, trail notes, and other good-to-know info, so none of it needs an internet or phone connection to work.

Navigation itself relies on GPS signal, which comes from satellites, not your phone network, so it works even where there’s no cell coverage or wifi at all. You’ll only need an internet connection once, beforehand, to download everything.

Is accommodation included in the price?

Accommodation is included in our self guided packages price, we book and secure every stay on your itinerary.
On rare occasions, in some of the more remote places we operate, mass tourism companies simply don’t reach, a particular night may require cash payment on-site instead of being prepaid. This doesn’t mean it’s not included, we’ve still arranged and confirmed it for you, only the payment method for that stay is different.

This will always be clearly flagged in that day’s information, along with any other details specific to that stay, and repeated as a note in the price includes section, so you know exactly what to expect well before you arrive.

Is food included in the price?

Yes, breakfast is included on most of our self guided packages price, and full board in a few select regions, check this tour’s inclusions section for the exact arrangement on this trip.

Beyond what’s included, we deliberately leave meals up to you.
Food is almost always available in or near your overnight stays. On some trails, you’ll also find shops and supply points during the day along the route, so you’re free to choose what to eat, try local places, or bring your own, rather than being locked into a fixed dining plan.

You’ll know exactly where in advance, these locations are marked in your app, and we walk through them with you on your 1:1 live video briefing before departure.

How fit do I need to be for this route?

Check this package’s difficulty rating above for daily distance, elevation, and terrain details, that’s the clearest way to judge whether this route matches your fitness level.

If you’re between tiers or unsure whether your fitness matches this specific route, our team can walk you through what a typical day looks like before you book.

How does booking and payment work?

See “Book in Minutes, Not Weeks” above for how your deposit secures your dates and how confirmation works.

After confirmation, the remaining balance is due no later than 60 days before departure unless other payment conditions are mentioned in the particular package details, payable by card or bank transfer. Any bank transaction fees are the traveler’s responsibility.

Can I change my dates or cancel?

The deposit is non-refundable once your booking is confirmed. Cancellation policies can vary by booking, the exact terms and dates that apply to you will be shown during your booking process.

Date changes may be possible if all local suppliers agree, subject to a per-day fee.

We recommend arranging cancellation insurance as soon as you book, this protects you in case your plans change later.

For full details, see our cancellation policy.

Is this a private self guided package, or part of a bigger group?

You travel with your own group, whether that’s just you, a partner, or friends. You’re never merged with strangers into a shared group.

That said, you may cross paths with other travelers on the same trail or staying at the same accommodations, and trail shuttles are sometimes shared between different groups. If you happen to make good company along the way, that’s entirely up to you, but you’re never assigned to travel as part of a larger group.

Do you accept solo traveler bookings?

Yes, solo travelers are always welcome, some of our own team members are known for their solo travels. We do our best to make sure solo travelers get the best price possible, and we treat solo travelers and bigger groups with the same great hospitality.

Every booking page shows a solo traveler pricing tier. All our booking processes are clear from the start, so you can see the exact price for your group size, including solo, before booking, no hidden fees, no guesswork.

How do I pack, do I need expensive or heavy outdoor gear?

No, you don’t need expensive or specialized outdoor gear. What matters most is comfortable shoes suited to sport and outdoor use, light clothing, and a manageable backpack, nothing bulky or overloaded.

Since your accommodations are secured and food and water are accessible along the way, you don’t need to carry much. Some packages also include luggage transfer, in which case you’ll have even less to carry day to day.

We provide a clear packing list for this package, and walk through anything gear-related during your 1:1 live video briefing before departure.
